Roma medievale e cristiana
Viaggio nel tempo alla scoperta della città eterna
After the first volume of the series dedicated to ancient Rome, the journey through space and time continues in search of medieval Rome, from the first centuries of Christianity up to its maximum splendor.
Also in this second volume, the journey takes place through 10 itineraries, to be covered preferably on foot: by following the thread of history without haste, tourists and Romans will thus be able to discover or recover the testimonies of the medieval period, which are mistakenly believed to have been cancel.
The undertaking is intriguing: reconstructing the lines of the real development of medieval events, starting from the first centuries of the life of Christianity in Rome.
We start from the dawn of Christianity in Rome, recalling in the first and second itinerary the events and legacies of the Roman stays of Saints Peter and Paul. The third itinerary is dedicated to the catacombs, in particular those of Domitilla, San Callisto and San Sebastiano. The fourth itinerary follows the transformation of Rome from the capital of the empire to the center of radiation of Christianity. The traces left by the Byzantine and Carolingian periods are described in the fifth itinerary, followed by the remaining works of the feudalization process, described in the sixth itinerary. The seventh and eighth itineraries introduce us to the palaces and neighborhoods of the great noble families, especially the two rival families of the Colonna and the Orsini. Finally, the last two itineraries are completely dedicated to the Vatican, which has always been a true “city within the city”.
