Ascoli nel Piceno

Storia di Ascoli e degli ascolani, dall’età della pietra all’epoca moderna.

“Ascoli nel Piceno by Secondo Balena is an excellent opportunity to fill that void of historical knowledge still present in many Ascolans towards their incomparable city”
Antonio Rodilossi

“A work that, despite the often complicated material, is read with great ease and pleasure, because the writer has understood, and therefore knows how to make himself understood”
Mariolina Massignani Cappelli – Archeoclub d’Italia of Ascoli Piceno

“According to Balena he is the first to have given us a universal history of our city and our people”
Andrea Flaiani – Cassa di Risparmio di Ascoli Piceno – President of Pro Ascoli

“Secondo Balena’s book represents a fixed point, one of those works created to summarize the research and interpretation efforts of the past by specialists and intended to update the knowledge of the general public”
Serafino Castelli – Il Resto del Carlino

Secondo Balena

Born in Ascoli Piceno in 1926, he began writing at a very young age on the columns of the “EIA” (weekly of the fascist federation) and on “Vita Picena” (weekly of the diocesan curia) which were the only newspapers allowed. In early June 1943 he was expelled from the “Italian Youth of the Littorio” because he was “subversive”, having written on a school subject that “after the surrender in Tunisia it was clear that Germans and Italians lost all battles”.
During the Nazi occupation he founded and directed the clandestine paper “Lo Studente”, worked with Renzo Roiati in the clandestine press of the Action Party and was partisan.
After the war he was editor of “Il Ribelle”, correspondent of “Voce Repubblicana” and then, with Alvaro Agostini, of the pages of “Momento”. Editor of the magazine “Il Marchigiano” and correspondent of the newspaper “Il Corriere Adriatico” he was also a collaborator of “Flash”.
He has published numerous books on history and folklore: “Bandenkrieg in the Piceno: history of the resistance in the Piceno”; “Castignano” in collaboration with Antonio Rodilossi; “Folklore Piceno: traditions of the Piceno people”; “Ascoli: history in the streets”, historical guide of the city: “The Female first part: Ascoli women in history”; “Arms and armed in Ascoli: Ascoli warriors over the centuries”.
He died in Ascoli Piceno in 1991.
