Gran Sasso – Laga a piedi
70 passeggiate, escursioni e trekking alla scoperta della natura
The Gran Sasso-Laga National Park has an enormous extension that not even the official definition can contain it all, the fascinating Gemelli Mountains are cut off and this boundless Park takes its name only from the two main massifs: the Gran Sasso and the Laga Mountains .
This guide sets the impossible goal of exploring a territory as vast as it is varied in the natural environments it safeguards: from the almost 3000 meters of the Corno Grande to the gentle hills of Teramo, lapped by the mild breezes that blow from the nearby Adriatic Sea. Mission impossible but carried out in the best possible way with the proposal of dozens of itineraries of all difficulties, which go to the most famous places as well as the hidden folds of the mountain, from the soft and green peaks of the Laga on which impetuous and romantic waterfalls flow to the lush beech forests of the Chiarino Valley, from the Franchetti Refuge to the via ferrata for the Bafile Bivacco, to the normal routes for the Due Corni or the superb Sentiero del Centenario on the Prena and Camicia mountains.
And then the history: in past centuries tens of thousands of heads of cattle grazed across the great plain of Campo Imperatore, grazing on the slopes from Monte San Franco to Camicia or in the protected valley of Campo Pericoli.
Campo Imperatore “the little Tibet of Abruzzo”, Rocca Calascio, Castel del Monte and Santo Stefano di Sessanio are just some of the spectacular testimonies that the wool trade has scattered throughout the area.
It is in this highly fascinating environment that the 70 itineraries unfold: some easy even for children, others challenging and hard, reserved only for those with basic mountaineering experience, equipment and the ability to move on rock safely.
