Castelli di Assisi tra i fiumi Chiascio e Tescio
Itinerari medievali Umbria vol. 4
Assisi and its territory boast a very ancient history that goes from the time when the Umbrians inhabited the slopes of Subasio up to the Etruscans, Romans and Lombards. But it is certainly the feudal period that introduces us to our itinerary: cities and countryside, hills and plains were defended by walls and towers, dozens of small and large castles, traces of which can still be seen in the suggestive villages that have sprung up there . Simultaneously with the establishment of the feuds, there was the birth of the Benedictine abbeys, with the fundamental work of the monks to drain the Tescio marshes, reclaim the Chiascio plain and thin out the woods. After 1200 monasteries and churches dedicated to St. Francis flourished, thus completing a historical, religious and artistic picture of the highest quality.
