The Marmore Falls is the result of man’s masterful work over the centuries with the aim of reclaiming large swampy areas, starting with the intervention of the Roman consul Manlio Curio Dentato in 271 BC. C. The leap of the Velino into the Nera – sung and represented by travellers, poets and painters to the point of assuming that canon, celebrated by romanticism, of “horrid beauty” – became one of the obligatory destinations of the Grand Tour in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
