This illustrated volume, the result of collaboration between the Province of Perugia, the Umbrian section of the Italian Historic Houses Association and Edimond, was born from the desire to make the historic houses of Umbria known and to ensure that an ever wider public is enticed to visit them. Leafing through these pages is like taking a journey through time: the historical events that have marked castles, stately villas, former religious buildings are retraced and, thanks to the combined power of words and images, the reader almost seems to be there, enjoying the beauty of tapestries, frescoes and ancient noble coats of arms, following in the footsteps of the important personalities who have stayed there and strolling in the dense greenery of the gardens. But what is more important is that each of these seductive places reveals itself as a historical cross-section, a precious testimony of different eras and experiences, as it tells the private history of the families who lived there, but also the economic, political and social situation of the Umbrian territory, the evolution of style, aesthetic taste and fashions over time.
