Storia di Perugia
Dalla preistoria ai giorni nostri
“The History of Perugia” from the Communitybook series is a journey to the magnificent city nestled on the hills overlooking the Tiber River. At the dawn of the geological eras, the two hills that today host it emerge from an immense expanse of water barely veiled by fog; they are islands populated by the first small mammals, but also by tigers, staggeringly sized deer and ravenous wolves. With the romanization, the city becomes Perusia. It is 40 AD. and the walls of the city are besieged by Octavian, who conquers it by setting it on fire. With the fall of the Empire comes Theodoric the great, then the siege of Totila and the courageous patron saint Herculaneum, murdered for having resisted the Ostrogothic general. In medieval times, the free commune revolved around the popes; it is here that the conclave for the election of Honorius III is held. The municipality expands, dozens of towers rise, the prisons under Piazza Minore host prisoners; one above all very illustrious, the future San Francesco.
