Il Mistero delle Tre Vette

Austriaci e tedeschi sul Gran Sasso dal 1875 al 1910

In August 1910 two mountaineers from distant Germany, Hans Riebeling and Hans Schmidt, climbed the highest and most spectacular ridge of the Gran Sasso for the first time, the one that culminates in the peaks of Corno Grande. Over the years their itinerary has become classic. But the story, the technical details, even the meaning of the two Germans’ crossing have been forgotten.

This book tells the rediscovery of Riebeling and Schmidt’s enterprise. A work that has had as its theater the specialized Italian, Austrian and German libraries, where Ilona Mesits has searched for stories and reports of ascents for years. And which also took place on the crest of the Tre Vette, where Francesco Burattini returned many times (one of these in a roped with Ilona) in search of a beautiful and forgotten itinerary.

In addition to the report by Schmidt and Riebeling, the book is completed by the stories, largely unpublished in Italian, of the ascents to the Gran Sasso made by other Austrian and German mountaineers and hikers of those years, in love with Italy and the Apennine mountains. . A book to read in one breath, dedicated to the love of Austrians and Germans for the wild heart of the Peninsula.
